Vyšehrad, the rock above the river with its dark outline of slender spires, is an inseparable part of the Prague skyline. The traditions of this mysterious site are bound up with the legends whose literary treatment was worked up Alois Jirásek from the ancient chronicles into his work "The Old Czech Legends". According to legends, Vyšehrad is the oldest seat of Czech princes. In the area there is the Romanesque rotunda of St. Martin from the 11th. century, the Gothic Church of St. Peter and Paul, underground casemates containing originals of some of the Baroque sculptures from the Charles Bridge and the Vyšehrad cemetery which was used as a burial site of many Czech outstanding personalilties since 1869 with a common tomb called Slavín.
