The town and monastery of Teplá is situated in the western Bohemia, close to the famous spa-city Mariánské Lázně, by the riverside of the Teplá.
The Premonstratensian Monastery of Teplá was founded in 1193 by the blessed squire Hroznata, a Czech nobleman. The oldest preserved architectural feature is the Romanesque-Gothic three-nave Annunciation church. The library and the museum were built in the New Baroque style between 1902-1910. The library is famous for its huge collection of the scarce books, which numbers 100 000 piece, among them many scradle-books and manuscripts. Nowadays the library is considered to be the second biggest library in the Czech Republik after the Strahov Library in Prag. Since the dawn of its existence, the monastery was involved in the colonization of this sparsely populated area, and became a spiritual, cultural, scientific and economic center of the region for centuries. The monastery is now open to the public and offers regular spiritual services, guided tours, concerts, exhibitions and many other cultural events.
