Belongs to important parts of the Slovak history. Nowadays, the Castle is partly reconstructed.
Its extraordinary strategic position, known to the Celts and the Romans, caused that the Slavic castle was built on a hillock and was mentioned for the first time in written resources in 864 as Dowina (ancient name for the castle; Dowina - from the Slavic/Slovak word deva for girl).
During the Great Moravian period, the Castle was one of the most important fortresses. After the end of the Great Moravian period, the Castle lost its strategic signification for a long time which was regained only in the 13th century, during the Austrian-Hungarian battles for the Devin Gate when a stone guard castle was built on the castle hill. A palace was added in the 15th century.
The ruins of Devin are located in Devin town, in a strategic position on the cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, on the borders of Slovakia and Austria. Thanks to its excellent position the Castle played a crucial role on the border of the Great Moravia and later the Hungarian Empire. In 1809 the Castle was destroyed by the retreating forces of Napoleon I of France and since then Devin has become an important national symbol for the Slovaks.
