The first male monastery in Bohemia was founded by Boleslav II. and St. Vojtěch in 993 and served as an important religious and cultural centre in the whole medieval period. Monastery buildings were built in the Baroque period, the Church of St. Markéta with a preserved Romanesque crypt was built by Kryštof Dientzenhofer. There are also many precious altar paintings of the famous Czech Baroque painter Petr Brandl.
