Bratislava Castle
National cultural monument symbolizing more than thousand years of the history of Slovak nation.
In the castle are there are expositions of the Slovak National Museum - Historical Museum of Furniture, Jewelry and Music Museum. It's located on the southern prominence of the Small Carpathians, on the promontory towering on the southern bank 85 m above Danube, on the crossroad of European long-distance paths. The stone castle was built in the 10th century when the region was a part of Hungary, in the 15th century it was rebuilt in Gothic style, in the 16th century in Renaissance style and in the 17th century in Baroque style. During the reign of Maria Theresa the castle was the seat of the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1811 it burned down and remained as a ruin till 1953 (reconstructed during 1953-1968 mostly in Baroque style). In 1961 it was proclaimed Czechoslovak National Cultural Monument.
