Stachy

The village Stachy belonged to the confederation of reeves of the Royal forest already since
1273, when this area has been connected to Bohemia by Přemysl Otakar II, Czech King. The beginnings of settlement dates back to the years 1550 - 1560. The inhabitants used to be engaged in commerce and glass industry. The first mentions of the Šumava glass date back to the 14th century whereas the history of the Czech crystal glass dates back to the 17th and 18th century. People made their living being engaged in wood product manufacture - Stachy shingle and wooden shoes.

The Church of Virgin Mary dates back to 1781. It was the first church built in the village. As time went by, the church became small for the village and therefore in 1849 a new, digger church has been built - the original Baroque Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, rebuilt into the present late Empire style. It's particular for its turned-up altar. Nowadays, the Church is located on the square of Stachy.

The village Stachy is located at 740 m above sea level, 4 km north-east from the village Zadov. Both villages are situated on the border of a unique natural complex in Europe, called "The green roof of Europe" which has been added to the UNESCO list in 1990 as a biospheric reservation.

In the village, there are many preserved buildings of urban type architecture from the 18th and 19th century. A typical feature of these timbered houses made of round beams is that the living wing is connected with the farming area and together they create one complex. Stachy is also famous for its so called "boletus mushroom reserve" on the square. In the park you can find mushroom (Boletus luridus) growing site.

This area is known especially as a centre of winter sports and paradise for mushroom-pickers, blueberry-pickers, hikers and cyclists in summer. Stachy is located in the middle of Stašská kotlina (Stachy basin), between Churáňov and Javorník. The village is spread on the foothills of Javorník, between the cities Vimperk and Kašperské Mountains and at the same time it creates a border of two regions: Prachatice and Klatovy. It is place famous for its popular architecture sightseeings, included in the preserved area of Stachy and Chalupa settlement.

In close proximity to Stachy, there is a natural swimming area and swimming pool. The area also offers numerous marked cycling trails for both beginners and experienced cyclists. Horse lovers won't surely miss visiting the Riding hall of the Chateau in Skalice, offering not only insight into history but also guided horse riding which can take up to several day trip.

The local environment offers everything your heart desires - from beautiful green meadows, and deep forests to romantic castles with numerous legends and other points of interest and monuments.
This area belongs to the best ones in the south-west part of Šumava.
